moonlitmirror: (subtly prompted)

sing a song.

In the span of breath there was a girl whose hair rivaled dust and eyes that spoke of the core of soft sunsets. Neither, in the end, would suit. She was a thing of quiet nights and empty alleys; leaking pipes and storefront apartments. But still, it remained.

Yin remained.

Even after that night.

So, in the breath taken inward, she sits on the bench in the park, feet trailing dirt and eyes trickling after. It is dusk, gloom and shadow, and still she is out, without orders and without motive--

A choice made. A choice of her own.

It is subtle, the beginning of evening, the transition from the sun's harsh tones to cityscape lights. He walks the pathway to his apartment, from the temporary work Li Shengshun picked especially for the locale.

And it is from returning that Hei finds her. A girl of unusual qualities sitting silently in an empty park, as if she belonged.

She does not, reason would speak. She has no business in the park tonight.

He steps to Yin and halts a few feet away, feet rooted to the dirt. His inquiry is simple:

"Why are you here?"

Connections. Yin answers as though it can be comprehended, and for a wavering beat, Hei thinks in literal terms. Connections he cannot possibly perceive, lines between points.

He knows, however. He knows to first ask for the beginning, the birth of her conclusion.

"Connections?"

"Between us," Hei repeats, the words lingering on the tip of his tongue. It clicks soon after, her meaning. More specifically, the truth behind the points.

His eyes turn up to find the sky and half-wonders if he will see rain.

"You think we have a connection." Between the mismatched group. He does not think such a thing could be possible, and yet Yin would claim otherwise.

Silence comes as confirmation. Hei breaks his gaze with the sky to look at Yin, watch her as she gives herself away.

She is correct, in a sense. They do carry a connection, the starting traces of a web. When she was taken away, Huang was adamant in ending her life. She still lives. Mao behaves as is natural for a contractor, but he shows an unnatural fondness for their dealings.

As for Hei--

He blinks. "Yin," he murmurs. "What are we? The four of us?"

Partners? Colleagues?

Friends?

It is an answer, an emphasis on the etymology than the basic meaning. The Japanese use this word to describe a kind of companionship, a relationship more complicated than those he has already silently named.

He does not know how to proceed. He knows exactly what to say.

"Nakama." A pause. "But we weren't before."

What has changed?

Any other explanation he would deny. Refuse with the entirety of his being, but Yin has learned. She conveys in a way he can accept.

Hei stares for a beat, before chancing a reply.

"Then we are nakama."

If that is her definition. If they recognize each other as beings with significance, then they have become what she says. Hei cannot deny this.

Her reaction is noted, memorized for a moment before addressed. There is something he isn't catching, and Hei understands more than most.

She has ways in expressing. It takes a certain form of perception.

"Yes?" he asks.

Yin looks for clarification. Hei does not provide an answer so much as a confirmation.

"You decided." Like that night, amid ruin and a crossroads. "You remember."

That she had asked before. That he had given her the choice. That he had answered first in an accusation from another. Another she could have chosen instead.

When she nods, the traces of tension laced within his muscles loosen, and Hei releases a breath held. He smiles in a way another could not label as such. It vanishes before the label can change.

He has a query of his own, now, one tied to the first topic. "Do you need to be anywhere?" he asks.

It is something else, and it shows in his expression. It is a quiet request he bears and nothing else. There is nothing else to do, after all. They are at a standstill in terms of necessity.

Hei voices the request a second later, with his eyes slipping upward toward the sky. "Do you want to watch the stars with me?"
messier: ([hei] quiet)

[personal profile] messier 2013-04-06 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
It is new, this request. It is a question he only offers to the rarest exceptions, to watch the night sky with its false stars.

And the reason still remains within himself.

Hei watches as Yin stands. He wonders about the cogs in her mind and then offers her his hand. A choice.

Yin gives a gesture as good as any, and if Hei is any other, he might chance a smile. Instead, he reaches to grasp her hand as it brushes past and perhaps with more intent than is necessary, the man tugs her toward the path to his apartment.

The reasoning should come as obvious. A formal watch requires a telescope, and Hei is currently empty-handed.

This is the first time, he thinks. The first time Yin will be invited into his space as a guest. There is no prior arrangements to consider, no cleaning to attend to. The apartment they arrive at is as empty as the grave.

And it shows, when he opens the front door. Hei peers into the darkness for a beat, before flipping the light switch.

"Wait there," he nods to the single open room.

The words are less a command as much as a courtesy. Yin could intrude as much as she likes, and Hei would voice no objections. The apartment, as stated, is empty. The items contained within are little more than functional fillers.

Except one. This one he procures from the bedroom fluidly, before slinging the bag over a shoulder. When the man slips back out to the entry way, he finds Yin by the sink, hand touching metal.

"Have you eaten?" is his query, one he forms without conscious thought.
